about

You can watch a video performance of this piece here: youtu.be/XIIwUb-L9Mw

"The rich feel safe, and yet they have names" was composed in late 2017, and premiered by the SMU Meadows Percussion Ensemble in April of 2018. It's influenced by Brett William Dietz, Christopher Rouse, Tigran Hamasyan, Mark Guiliana, and Squarepusher, among others.

This piece revolves around the application of drumset ideas to classical multipercussion, and subdivisions of a strict common whole note between 4 players. (I've previously written about the idea of expanded divisions of the whole note here, if you're interested: eden.care/blog/2017/4/14/unsquaring-the-meter-part-1-of-an-examination-of-new-theoretical-concepts-in-music )

Recorded in Caruth Auditiorium at Southern Methodist University in April of 2018. Audio is from several takes. Video is from only two takes, so you may notice slight aberrations here and there.

To each according to need.
